Paper on Medication Affordability Resources

Happy to announce that our team’s paper on’ ‘The Administrative Burden of Medication Affordability Resources: An Environmental Scan with Implications for Health Informatics to Advance Health Equity has been accepted and will be published shortly in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

The paper summarizes an environmental scan of medication affordability resources for commonly prescribed medications for atrial fibrillation and its common comorbidities (diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, lipid disorder). We characterize the administrative burden of applying for medication affordability resources for people with co-morbidities. Across each condition, we identify 66 resources across 12 categories with varied eligibility criteria, application processes, and requirements for providing sensitive financial documents. Through the paper we illustrate how the volume and complexity of resources and related application processes may create substantial administrative burden for patients. We conclude by calling for informatics tools that can reduce administrative burden- and thus, promote equitable medication access.
